TELL CITY — Tell City, over the summer, put together a different look for Bryan Taylor Arena and it will be on display as the athletic season begins next week for scrimmages.

The school noticed throughout last year that the floor was starting to flake off, according to John Lyons, Tell City Athletic Director.

“We had places on the gym floor where the finish was flaking off,” Lyons said. “After speaking with a professional about repairs, we applied a temporary fix on the floor covering. After that, the decision was made that it was time to get the floor refinished.”

This project was not something Lyons thought about accomplishing when he took the athletic director position last year. However, he enjoyed the process when putting together the research for how he envisioned the court.

“Refinishing the court was not on any list of things I had in mind of accomplishing, but I enjoyed the process and I am excited about the results,” Lyons said. “Throughout basketball season, I took pictures of other courts to incorporate pieces of what other schools had that I liked and I thought I could translate into representing the Tell City Marksmen tradition.”

The newly designed floor is also an opportunity to create excitement for the programs that use it. Whether it is for a basketball game, volleyball game or more, Lyons believes there is an opportunity for a boost of motivation.

“Having nice facilities is always a good motivator for kids,” Lyons said. “Will the new floor automatically make our kids better athletes? I do not think so, but the student-athletes do appreciate that we invest in them. Hopefully, they will invest back into their respective Marksmen programs.”

Meanwhile, traditionalists of Bryan Taylor Arena will not see it all disappear. Lyons wanted to have history from the previous gym and a unique design.

“There are several parts of the floor that stayed the same to preserve the gym’s history,” Lyons said. “There were also a few places that saw significant changes. Bryan Taylor is one of the best sports arenas around. We wanted to honor the rich athletic heritage of Tell City High School while giving the floor an updated, modern look.”
